As we near the end of the year, we’re not only seeing best-of lists and year-end roundups, we’re also starting to see trend forecasts and predictions—foremost is the Pantone Color Institute’s chosen color for the coming year.
2025’s Color of the Year is officially called “Mocha Mousse” or Pantone 17-1230.
The annual deliberation for Pantone’s Color of the Year considers the period’s culture and moods. According to a post-color announcement webinar hosted by Pantone, they chose the color of the year to symbolize the age we live in.
“The color we select each year to be our Pantone Color of the Year is a color we see crossing all areas of design, a color that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude on the part of the consumers, a color that will resonate around the world, a color that reflects what people are looking for, what they feel they need, that color can hope to answer,” said Pantone’s vice president Laurie Pressman.
Mocha Mousse was chosen for its sensorial hue, which touches on feelings of indulgence balanced with refinement, earthiness alongside deliciousness, a rich mellow tone that is both natural and classic.

The soft brown tone takes inspiration from images of nature, thus aligning with current movements toward a preference for things natural and organic, and tying with sustainability and connecting with the environment. As the name suggests, it also references delectable sweet treats like chocolate, coffee, and cacao, reflecting the desire for comfort and pleasure.
We can expect mocha mousse to impact 2025’s colorways and designs in ways like balancing out vibrant tonesuna game, adding natural touches to spaces, and, in the realm of fashion, cementing its place as a neutral shade, joining the ranks of black, white, and dark navy.
