MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the multiple-vehicle crash along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City on Thursday evening increased to four, police said Friday.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) also said that the truck driver was eventually arrested hours after he allegedly fled the scene.

The fatal incident happened at 6:55 p.m., December 5, as the involved vehicles were passing the flyover on Katipunan Avenue toward C. P. Garcia.

The 10-wheeler truck being driven by Richard Mangupag hit a vehicle, which then crashed into other cars and motorcycles. Initially, authorities said three people died from the incident.

The QCPD likewise said Friday that the death toll consisted of one female and three males and that the incident wounded 26 other people.

Mangupag was arrested during a follow-up police operation at 1:30 a.m., December 6, the QCPD noted.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said that aside from the 10-wheeler truck, a passenger bus, an L300 van, five cars, and 16 motorcycles were involved in the crash.

“The crash caused significant disruption, with debris scattered across the area and traffic completely halted,” the BFP said in a report.
